Climatic controls on the spring phytoplankton growing season in a temperate shelf sea

چکیده

Abstract The Northwest European Shelf is positioned directly beneath the North Atlantic Storm Track, within which frequency and intensity of transient storms are modulated by large‐scale climatic oscillations. In temperate shelf seas, impact on physical environment has received considerable attention, but effect biogeochemistry less studied. Here, we use output from a multidecadal (1982–2015) coupled physical‐biogeochemical model supported observations ocean gliders to investigate phytoplankton growth throughout winter‐spring transition. We define two separate events: spring bloom, defined as exponential following seasonal stratification, prebloom, occurring before accounting for up 22% total growth. Our results support paradigm that light first‐order control, with bloom initiating 22 days after stratification onset should levels be too low trigger bloom. prebloom heavily influenced phase Multidecadal Oscillation (AMO), demonstrated an acceleration in rate increase chlorophyll concentrations (±90% confidence limit) 7.6 ± 2.8 mg m −2 d −1 (during positive AMO) 13.1 4.3 (negative AMO), due modulation periods ephemeral occur between successive storms. propose events might help buffer lag supply larval recruitment, particularly during years when delayed.

Landscape controls on the timing of spring, autumn, and growing season length in mid-Atlantic forests

The timing of spring leaf development, trajectories of summer leaf area, and the timing of autumn senescence have profound impacts to the water, carbon, and energy balance of ecosystems, and are likely influenced by global climate change. Limited field-based and remote-sensing observations have suggested complex spatial patterns related to geographic features that influence climate. However, mu...

Seasonal variation in the phytoplankton community of a continental-shelf sea: the East China Sea

To better understand seasonal variation in phytoplankton community structure in the East China Sea (ECS), 4 research cruises were carried out between August 2009 and June 2011 over the continental shelf. Phytoplankton community structure and ambient seawater physicochemical parameters were examined. The phytoplankton community in the ECS was mainly composed of diatoms and dinoflagellates, with ...

the effect of taftan pozzolan on the compressive strength of concrete in the environmental conditions of oman sea (chabahar port)

cement is an essential ingredient in the concrete buildings. for production of cement considerable amount of fossil fuel and electrical energy is consumed. on the other hand for generating one tone of portland cement, nearly one ton of carbon dioxide is released. it shows that 7 percent of the total released carbon dioxide in the world relates to the cement industry. considering ecological issu...

Climatic Controls on Phytoplankton Biomass in a Sub-tropical Estuary, Florida Bay, USA

The extraction of climatic signals from time series of biogeochemical data is further complicated in estuarine regions because of the dynamic interaction of land, ocean, and atmosphere. We explored the behavior of potential global and regional climatic stressors to isolate specific shifts or trends, which could have a forcing role on the behavior of biogeochemical descriptors of water quality a...

Phytoplankton Distribution in Relation to Environmental Drivers on the North West European Shelf Sea

The edge of the North West European Shelf (NWES) is characterised by a steep continental slope and a northward flowing slope current. These topographic/hydrographic features separate oceanic water and shelf water masses hence potentially separate phytoplankton communities. The slope current may facilitate the advective transport of phytoplankton, with mixing at the shelf edge supporting nutrien...
